Professor behind ’Fast-track surgery’ honoured with award

Today we are delighted to officially present Professor Henrik Kehlet – the recipient of our inaugural BJS Society Award – with his award at a ceremony in Switzerland’s Lausanne.

Professor Kehlet was selected by a panel of experts from around the global surgical community, in a process similar to that of the selection for Nobel laureates, for his profound impact on patient care.

Described as a “colossus” in the field of research into perioperative care, Professor Kehlet’s works, based on sound basic science research, translational research, clinical trials, and publication of guidelines, have led to a paradigm shift in the principles of perioperative care.

Inaugural BJS Society Award Recipient Unveiled

In October 2022, we opened the nomination window for the inaugural BJS Society Award, inviting you to nominate an exceptional individual who has had a profound impact on patient care.

What followed was a rigorous judging process, similar to the selection process for Nobel laureates, with a confidential panel of experts reviewing over 70 nominations made by experts from around the global surgical community.

Today, we are delighted to announce Professor Henrik Kehlet as the recipient of this award.

Professor Kehlet, Professor of Perioperative Therapy at the University of Copenhagen, has been recognised for his ground-breaking “Enhanced Recovery After Surgery” (ERAS) protocols, which have changed clinical practice in multiple fields of surgery and improved outcomes for patients all over the world.

Anders Bergenfelz, Chair of the BJS Society, said: “The rubric for this award states that it should represent a discovery, innovation or scientific study within the field of surgery that has changed clinical practice with a profound impact on patient care, and it is patently clear that Professor Kehlet’s outstanding work fulfills every one of these criteria.”

The accolade includes an award of €100,000, the largest monetary prize of its kind in the surgical field.

The award will be presented at a ceremony in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Friday 16 June.
